Job Position: Intern Estimator

A Behal Sampson Dietz 'Intern Estimator' assists the estimators within the company in all areas of estimating work including: pre-construction estimating, final costing, value engineering, sub contractor relations, product research and historical unit cost research. The Estimating Department will estimate between 10 and 15 million dollars of custom residential and / or light commercial construction each year. Project sizes can range from $100,000 to 5 million in construction value. The experience gained by the Intern Estimator in this position will render a wide perspective of the process of Design-Build and the value of good planning.


An Intern Estimator's Responsibilities:

  • Pre-construction – Provide general unit take-offs and provide value engineering .
  • Final Costing – Assist Senior Estimators in all aspects of final costing from preparing bid packages to hand-off of project to construction team.
  • Subs/Supplier Relations – Maintain company bidders list including recruitment and investigation of new subs and suppliers.
  • Product research – Investigate new and improved materials and procedures for construction. This includes administering tests and providing reports and recommendations for use.
  • History – Collect and breakdown project costs into unit costs for estimating database.


An Intern Estimator's Profile:

  • Our Intern Estimators are an integral part of the project team and must accept that responsibility and use it to meet the demands of every project - while achieving the satisfaction and respect of the entire team.
  • A sound background and working skill in the operation of computer programs such as Microsoft Project and Microsoft Word is required.
  • Wood and light-gauge metal construction is the predominant method of assembly for BSD projects, and exceptional skill and knowledge of those methods is required.
  • A formal education in either Architecture or Construction Management is desirable.
  • 1-3 years experience in the construction field - some of which being hands-on--is desired. Also, experience in a variety of project types and structural systems is a plus.
  • Exceptional people skills are a major requirement for the Intern Estimator position.
  • Creativity is a must.
